1 Overview

1.1 Introduction

Thank you for purchasing a Neptune 7.1 channel automatic room equalizer! This product has been designed using top of the line components and PCB layout techniques to ensure the highest possible fidelity of sound. With care, it should give you many years of enjoyment.

In the following pages, you will find all of the information needed to set up, test and use this product. Please take the time to read all of the instructions carefully, and understand the operation before you begin. Please read all cautions and warnings before plugging the unit into an A.C. outlet.

The Neptune EQ 701 system is designed for the express purpose of compensating for problems caused by the Home theater room. Every home theater installation is different, there is no one design which fixes all. Assuming that you have a high quality sound system, the audio performance of this system is likely excellent. What remains is the room acoustics. Rooms can be made acoustically very good, but it is a costly procedure and may not result in a room decor that you are looking for. The Neptune EQ 701 system removes these anomalies without having to redesign the room.

1.3 Benefits

The EQ 701 automatic room equalizer is designed for high end home theater use. The purpose of the equalizer is to correct for any frequency response flaws caused by room reflections or resonances. When properly used, it will enhance the sound quality of even the very best home theaters, because even the best theaters will suffer from some response anomalies. The EQ 701 uses the same criterion and testing practices as do professional movie theaters. Normally, this practice requires the services of a trained professional to meticulously measure the room response in various places. After taking these measurements, certain measurements are discarded, and the remaining ones are weighted and averaged. A correction curve is then created, and a 30 band equalizer is adjusted. This process is then repeated for each of the remaining channels. As you might guess, this is a very expensive process, almost always reserved for professional movie theaters. Usually, a much more limited version of EQ is used in a home theater, which is set by ear, or no EQ is used at all. Now, with the creation of the EQ 701, this professional quality equalization is finally available and for home theater use.

2 Installation

2.1 Before you begin

2.1.1 Shipment:

The Neptune EQ 701 System was carefully packed for shipment using a packing design to withstand some of the harshest shipping environments. Still shipping damage can happen. Before opening please inspect the package for any signs of physical damage, which may have occurred during shipping. If damage has occurred, please report it to the shipping company right away.

2.1.2 Initial operation:

Be sure the unit has adequate space around it for cooling purposes. To avoid overheating please do not place the EQ 701 unit on high temperature devices such as power amplifiers or radiators.

2.1.3 Warranty:

Please take time to fill out and return the warranty card within 14 days after the purchase date. You will find the serial number on the back of the unit.

2.1.4 This users manual

The users manual is designed to give you an overview of the controls as well as detailed information on how to use them. You will find a detailed short description of the most important functions in chapter 4.

2.2 Cautions

  • As with any electrical appliance, care should be taken to ensure the unit doesn't get wet. If this should occur, unplug the unit from the wall outlet immediately, and bring it to an authorized repair facility for inspection before using it again.

  • There are no user serviceable parts inside of the unit. Never take the cover off of the unit. Refer all service to an authorized repair facility.

  • This product is equipped with an Earth potential voltage limiting device. The chassis should never be brought above 40 Volts of earth ground. If this should occur, a circuit breaker in your house should trip. If this does not happen, the internal fuse will blow. Again bring the unit to an authorized repair facility for inspection before using it again if this should happen.

  • Always plug the product into an Earth grounded A.C. outlet. Do not defeat the safety devices by cutting the ground terminal, or using a 3 terminal to 2 terminal adapter. If you don't have an Earth grounded a.c. outlet nearby, call in a qualified electrician to install one.

  • Never apply more than 130V to the a.c. mains when in 120V mode, or 260V to the a.c. mains when in 240V mode. If you are unsure of the voltage available, call in a qualified electrician to find out. Be certain the voltage selector switch is set to the proper position before applying A.C. mains voltage.

  • The signal inputs do have input overvoltage protection, but some care should be taken not to apply more than 12V to any input terminal. Brief voltage spikes up to 30V can be tolerated.

  • Care should be taken to ensure that no physical shock happens to the product, like dropping it, or shipping it with inadequate packing protection. If there is evidence of physical shock or damage, bring the unit to an authorized repair facility for inspection and test before using it.

  • Do not apply currents through ground connections. This can happen if connecting it to two different products which have differing potentials between their chassis, or any unit which has a potential between it's chassis and Earth ground.

  • Do not expose the product to temperature greater than 150 degrees F. when not in use, or 110 degrees F. when in use.

  • 2.3 Connecting the equalizer

The EQ-701 is designed to connect between the preamplifier and power amplifier.

Using the block diagram (below) you can see the intended placement of this device.

    General Block Diagram

Connect either the balanced or the unbalanced inputs on the EQ-701 to their corresponding outputs from a home theater preamplifier. Do not use both the balanced and unbalanced inputs simultaneously. If both types of connections are available on the preamplifier, you should use the balanced connections, as they will give you superior performance.

Connect the balanced or the unbalanced outputs on the EQ-701 to their corresponding inputs on a power amplifier. Again, do not use both types simultaneously.

You may use the balanced outputs even if you are using the unbalanced inputs, and vice versa. Optimum performance will be realized when using the balanced connections for both the input and the output, however, using the unbalanced and a "balancing converter" will probably not be as good as using the unbalanced only.

Set the voltage selector switch into the proper position for your area. Then plug the equalizer into an A.C. outlet.

    3 Operation

    3.1 Front panel

The front panel consists of a display, 5 buttons, and a mic connector. When performing any automatic functions, the mic is required (more on that later.)

The 5 buttons are used for navigating the menus. If you will note, 4 of the buttons are arrow shaped and indicate the direction you want to go, the 5th generally terminates the function but changes it's action in some cases.

When you first power on the EQ, it will display a logo, and perform some self tests. This takes about 1 second, then you will see the "Main Menu."

Refer to the menu tree (section 3.2) for quick navigation.

    3.2 Menus

To select a function, use the UP and DOWN arrows to select a menu function you want, then press the RIGHT button to execute the function. The menus are arranged in levels. The top level (level 1) is the "Main Menu." There are four general catigorys of operation.

    These include:
  • Presets,
  • Tone Control,
  • Installation and Setup,
  • Misc

  • After some amount of time (the default is two minutes and is adjustable,) the EQ will go into screen saver mode. When this happens, pressing any button will return to menu mode and should always show the top lelvel menu.

Shown below is the menu tree in it's entirety:

    Menu

For the remainder of this document, menu functions will be shown as below. For example, when describing the function to set the active channels, you will see a picture like this:

    Menu

From the top level (Main Menu,) press UP or DOWN until "Installation and Setup" is displayed then press RIGHT.
Press UP or DOWN until "Channel Control" is diplayed then press RIGHT.
Press UP or DOWN until "Select Active Channels" is diplayed then press RIGHT.

Normally, when you are finished with the function, you press CENTER to return to the menu. In this example, you will be returned to the "Select Active Channels" menu option. To return to the Main Menu, press LEFT twice.

    3.3 Getting Started

Assuming this is the first time you are using the EQ-701, you will need to set up the input sensitivity and select the active channels. Lets setup the input sensitivity first.

Input sensitivity refers to the level of signal the power amp requires to get full volume. Different manufacturers have different requirements.

Please make every effort to find out the power amplifier's sensitivity. If you are unsure, use the highest setting which allows for an adequate noise floor. The purpose of setting this is to make it possible to get the maximum output power from the amplifier, while maintaining the maximum signal to noise ratio. Improper setting of this parameter will either raise the noise floor, or reduce the maximum output power available. If maximum output is not a factor in this system, you can reduce the residual noise by using a lower setting. The equalizer's input sensitivity will always be 1.0Vrms either balanced or unbalanced.

    Menu

Except for the Center and woofer channels (woofer is not settable,) sensitivitys are adjusted in pairs (Left and Right Front, Left and Right Surround, etc...)
To select which pair you want to change, press either RIGHT or LEFT . To change the value, press either UP or DOWN. When finished, press CENTER.

    The available settings are:
    Setting Unbalanced Balanced
    -3db 0.707Vrms .414Vrms
    0db 1.0Vrms 2.0Vrms
    +3db 1.414Vrms 2.83Vrms
    +6db 2.0Vrms 4.0Vrms

Use the same procedure to select the active channels:

    Menu

Active channels are used to shorten the time required for performing automatic functions. The EQ will always process audio through all 8 channels, but if some channels are unused, setting those to "Inactive" will cause the EQ to skip them when perfomeing automatic functions.

    3.4 Automatic Functions

The EQ-701 outputs a test signal, and listens for the response from the room. It then sets several parameters depending on the function you select. In order for this to work, you will need to connect the microphone to the EQ. Unwrap the cord, and begin by placeing the mic on the back of your favorate sitting position pointing up. See drawing below. Plug the connector into the jack in the front of the EQ-701.

The first position is used to set the delays, so it should be in the most central location. A compermise of the listening positions.

Two of the functions under Automatic Adjustments will allow you to select either all channels (except for thise set to inactive,) or a single channel (recardless if it has been set to inactive or not.)

    3.4.1 Auto adjust Everything

    Menu

will perform all the functions described below.

    3.4.2 Auto adjust EQ

    Menu

You will be asked if you want to set all (active,) or one channel. You are then asked to place the microphone in the first listening position (see "placing the mic" in section nn.)

If you selected all channels, or, if you selected the woofer, it will remind you to set the controls in the woofer (see "seetting woofer controls" in section nn.)

It will ask you to place the microphone in the room.

When ready, press CENTER and a short countdown will begin allowing you time to leave the room. This time is adjustable.

The EQ will then output a test signal or two and cycle through the selected channels.

When finished, (only a few seconds,) it will ask for you to move the mic, and it will repeat the tests.

After the 5th test (5 mic positions are used,) it will set the EQ and return to the menu.

    3.4.3 Auto adjust Channel Balance

    Menu

This menu option relys on previous automatic EQ test. It outputs no signals and requires no inputs from you. It does, however, set the relitave output levels so each of the active channels should be the same volume.

    3.4.4 Auto adjust Crossover

    Menu

Again, this menu option relys on previous automatic EQ test. It outputs no signals and requires no inputs from you. It does, however, set the crossover point between the woofer and other channels.

    3.4.5 Auto adjust Delays

    Menu

When selected, the EQ will output a very short signal and measure the time it takes for the signal to reach the microphone. The mic should be placed in the most central location between the listening positions. After knowing the time delay for each speaker to reach the mic, the EQ will 'normalize' the numbers by finding the shortest time (closest speaker) and subtract that amount from all channels. For example, say you are checking the delay on only 2 channels (L and R) also, say the L is 10 feet from the mic and the R is 15 feet. The EQ will measure 5.88Ms for the L chan and 8.88Ms for the R. It will subtract 5.88 (being the smalest number of the measurements,) from all channels yealding zero for the L and 8.88-5.88 (or-3Ms) for the R.

    3.5 Manual EQ Functions

The EQ-701 is carefully designed to make everything that the EQ handles automatic. Each of the measurements described above is handled automaticly and a lot of time and design effort was put in to assureing the best possabile performance. In rare cases, when you want make some changes, manual controls are included to allow you to change any of the parameters the EQ handls.

The procedure for each is described below.

    3.5.1 Manual adjust EQ

    Menu

When Selected, you will be asked which channel you would like to adjust. Then the current EQ settings for that channel are displayed and the functions for the buttons change to handle changing the EQ.

Use LEFT and RIGHT to change the active band,
UP and DOWN allow you to change the level for that band.
When you are finished, press CENTER, and the current settings will be saved.

    3.5.2 Manual adjust Channel Balance

    Menu

This function allows you to change the RELITIVE output levels of all 8 channels. The display shows the attenuation from full output (or 0db.) A larger number means less output. To optomize the signal to noise ratio, at least one channel is always zero db. When trying to increase the output beyond 0db, the EQ will reduce all the other channels instead.

To select a channel, press either LEFT or RIGHT.
To change the level, press either UP or DOWN.
    When finished, press CENTER.

    3.5.3 Manual adjust Crossover

    Menu

You can change the subwoofer crossover point here.

Press either UP or DOWN to change the crossover frequency.
    Press CENTER when finished.

    3.5.4 Manual adjust Delays

    Menu

This function allows you to change the ABSOLUTE delays of the 8 channels. Unlike the automatic delay function, the absolute measurement is saved for your convienyence. The numbers you see should represent the actual distance (plus or minus 4.5 inches.)

To select a channel, press either LEFT or RIGHT.
To change the delay, press either UP or DOWN.
    When finished, press CENTER.

    3.6 Channel Control Menu

    3.6.1 Select Active Channels

    Menu

Active channels are used to shorten the time required for performing automatic functions. The EQ will always process audio through all 8 channels, but if some channels are unused, setting those to "Inactive" will cause the EQ to skip them when perfomeing automatic functions.

3.6.2 Select Internal or External Crossover

    Menu

The EQ701 has the ability to handle the woofer crossover for you. This is prefered to using external crossovers. However, if you don't have control over the external crossover, you can disable the crossover here.

This is a "toggle" meaning, there is no submenu and the value simply changes to the other setting when selected.

    3.6.3 Poweramp Sensitivity

    Menu

    3.7 Miscellaneous

Many of the functions under this menu heading are rather self explanitory. but one or 2 could use a little amplification.

    3.7.1 Pink Noise Demo

    Menu

This function demonstrates the difference between straight through, and EQ'd

When entered, you will be asked if you want to cycle through the channels manually, or automaticly. Once that choice has been made, the unit will output pink nois on a channel. You then celect if you want the noise EQ's or not.

Pressing CENTER will terminate the test.

    3.7.2 Temporarally Bypass EQ

    Menu

This function will bupass the equalizer. When you press CENTER, it will revert back to normal EQ'd mode.

    3.7.3 Clear Room Time

    Menu

When performing an automatic EQ, it is prefered you are not in the room. The anount of time the system gives you is variable and defaults to 10 seconds.

    3.7.4 Adjust Display Brightness

    Menu

    This function s self explainary.

    3.7.5 Screen Saver

    Menu

After some amount of time of inactivity the display will enter a screen saver mode. The amount of time is adjustable here. Pressing any button will return the display to the top menu. The screen saver more is only entered if the EQ is waiting for you to choose a menu function. If you are already in a subfunction, then the screen saver more is disabled untill you complete the function.

    3.7.6 Show Diagnostice

    Menu

This allows you to toggle between showing extra diagnostics during the automatic functions. While showing these extra numbers, sometimes it will wait for you to press CENTER to continue.

    3.7.7 Show Software Versions

    Menu

The EQ701 has 2 Digital Signal Processors inside. When calling for technical support, the technition may ask you for this information.

    3.7.8 Clear Flash Memory

    Menu

Any settings changed by either automatic functions, or manual functions, or user presets are stored in a non volatile flash memory. This is so when the EQ is power cycled, it can return to the last state it was in. Clearing the Flash Memory will restore the factory default settings for all things and remove any presets you have stored.
